D.S.B. IX p. 569 :" In 1820 the Bonn Faculty of Medicine posed its first prize question: Does the fetus breathe in the mother's womb? Müller entered the competition and sought to clarify the problem through experiments on live animals. Experiments on pregnant cats were not successful. He was first able to demonstrate that the fetus breathes in an experiment on a ewe. Observing the umbilical cord, he ascertained that bright red blood flows to the fetus through the umbilical vein and that dark blood flows back to the placenta through the umbilical artery. Fetal respiration is one of the few problems that Müller solved through vivisection on warm-blooded animals. Later he had harsh words for his crude , 'knife'happy' type of experiments. Rothschuch p. 112 :"Schon in Jahre 1820, als einjähriger Student, bearbeitete er die damals von der die damals von der Universität gestellte Preisaufgabe über die Atmung des Foetus.... mit dem Erfolg dass er den Preis für diese Erstlingsarbeit ' de respiratione foetus' (1823) zugesprochen erhielt. The first publication by Müller in the first and only ed. Very scarce not seen at any German book auction sale during the last 45 years. Only in Waller (6729) and Osler. 3464. Würzburg, without publisher, 1817.iv, 42 p.(ii) pp., 20 engraved plates 35 cm. uncut. modern boards, part of original printed wrapper mounted. (= author and titleLast textpage with the printermark. " Gedruckt bei Heinrich Ludwig Brönner in Frankfurt a/M." The 20 plates are numbered I - X and there are also 9 outline key plates for the number s I - X and a plate named : " Tafel der Querdurchschnitte" Uncut. some foxing. plate IX and X with damage of water in the margin. copy on heavy paper except the plates. But a very good copy.
First German edition and the First edition with the plates. The plates are by Joseph Wilhelm Edouard d'Alton the elder ( 1772 - 1840), a German naturalist who took part in Pander's embryological investigations. The plates are accurate and contained the most complete representation of the chick's embryological development to that date.( See Norman no 1632). Garrison & Morton no. 474 ( Latin edition in the same year). :" Pander's doctoral thesis in which he announced his discovery of the trilaminar structure of the chick blastoderm, which term he also coined. This discovery stimulated von Baer's research. Pander later paid for the publication of an illustrated German-language edition of the thesis. The original Latin edition has no illustrations." The word Pander used is the German for Blastoderm ( Keimhaut.) Very scarce the last copy on a German auction sale was about 25 years ago in 1979.
